Varsity Lecturers' Strike: Falana-led Group, ASCAB Insists Planned Nationwide Protest Is Lawful, Mobilises Lawyers Across Nigeria To Defend Protesters

T he Alliance on Surviving Covid-19 and Beyond (ASCAB) chaired by human rights lawyer, Femi Falana, SAN, says the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) is within its rights to protest against the continued stay of students at home, following the failure of the Nigerian government to reach an agreement with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU). Minister of Information and Culture Lai Mohammed had described the planned nationwide solidarity protest in support of ASUU as illegal. The group also said it had "mobilised lawyers in the Federal Capital Territory and the 36 States of the Federation to provide legal services for the protesters.”  The NLC had announced that it would embark on a nationwide protest on July 26 and 27 to compel the Nigerian government to resolve the over five-month-old strike.
