NLC Shuns Meeting With FG, Begins Two-Day Warning tSrike

The Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, will today begin a two-day warning strike after shunning a meeting with the Federal Government over increasing hardship and suffering across the country caused by the removal of fuel subsidy. This came as the Minister of Labour and Employment, Simon Lalong, yesterday warned that the strike will worsen the plights of ordinary Nigerians and urged NLC to shelve the action. The NLC had on Friday, given notice of a two-day warning strike to protest the excruciating mass suffering and impoverishment experienced around the country, threatening a total and indefinite shutdown of the economy within 14 working days or 21 days after the warning strike, if government did not take steps to address the hardship experienced across the country. ‘Punishing Economic Circumstances’ — Banks, Insurance Firms To Join NLC’s Two-Day Strike

The National Union of Banks, Insurance and Financial Institutions Employees (NUBIFIE) says its members will join the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in its two-day strike action. NLC recently announced plans to embark on a nationwide strike to protest the hike in petrol pump price, electricity tariff, alongside other issues, and accused the federal government of abandoning negotiations. The congress also said the government has failed to implement some of the resolutions reached at previous meetings. The industrial action is scheduled to start on Tuesday, September 5, 2023. Aligning with the movement, NUBIFIE in a statement signed by  Mohammed Sheikh, its general secretary,  directed all members to stay off duty during the two-day strike. FG Moves To Avert NLC Proposed 2-day Warning Strike

THE Federal Government on Monday made desperate efforts to avert the proposed two day warning strike being organized by the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, over the worsening economic situation in the country. Already, the Minister of Labour and Employment, Rt. Hon. Simon Lalong has summoned meeting involving all relevant stakeholders including the leadership of NLC to a negotiation meeting in Abuja. Briefing journalists in his office, the Minister appealed to the organised Labour to shelve their strike in the interest of Nigerians in order to allow all stakeholders to work towards amicable resolution of the contending issues on ground. Lagos Govt Warns Residents To Avoid Crossing Blue Rail Track

The Chief Press Secretary to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Gboyega Akosile, advised the residents to rather use the overhead bridges as the rail line is electrified. Lagos State residents have been warned by the state government to avoid crossing the track of the Blue Rail line which is set to start full commercial operations on Monday.   The private security firm alleged that the navy arrested four of its personnel chasing the suspects on the high seas towards a naval base. The management of Tantita Security Services Nigeria Limited, a Nigerian government-contracted oil pipeline surveillance firm, under ex-militant leader, Government Ekpemopolo (aka Tompolo) has claimed the Nigerian Navy is stopping its personnel from arresting some suspected oil thieves. The private security firm alleged that the navy arrested four of its personnel chasing the suspects on the high seas towards a naval base. The union announced the industrial action on Friday to demand immediate adjustment of economic policies to make lives easier and more meaningful for the masses. The Nigeria Labour Congess (NLC) has declared a two-day nationwide warning strike from next Tuesday, September 5, 2023 over the economic hardship in the country, worsened by the removal of the petrol subsidy by the government. The union announced the industrial action on Friday to demand immediate adjustment of economic policies to make lives easier and more meaningful for the masses. NLC in June also declared a nationwide strike amid fuel shortages across the country occasioned by President Bola Tinubu’s inaugural speech in which he declared that “fuel subsidy is gone” . Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation – Mele Kyari The nation’s fuel consumption has declined by 30 per cent following the removal of petrol subsidy by President Bola Tinubu.  The Group Managing Director (GMD) of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), Mr. Mele Kyari, disclosed this at the media briefing by the Minister of Finance and Co-ordinating Minister of the Economy,  Mr. Wale Edun, in Abuja this afternoon. According to Mr. Kyari, the reduction in fuel demand from about 66.7 million litres daily before the removal of subsidy to about 46 million currently also meant a 30 percent reduction in NNPCL’s demand for foreign exchange to import fuel. System Collapse: TCN Says Power Grid Stable For Over A Year

  The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has said it achieved one year zero power grid failure so far. Findings show that the last system collapse occurred on September 26, 2022. Ndidi Mbah, TCN spokesperson, in a statement, however, said the power grid has maintained stability for over 400 consecutive days, adding that the grid operated without any major disruptions or systems collapse within the period. She said the milestone signifies a remarkable advancement in the nation’s efforts at strengthening its power infrastructure and ensuring a reliable and dependable electricity supply to distribution load centres for onward supply to customers nationwide. “The sustained stability and reliability of the Nigerian power grid can be attributed to a combination of strategic measures and investments in the power system by the Management of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN),” she said.
