Arsenal V Man United Score, Result, Highlights As Declan Rice Wins It For Gunners In Stoppage Time

Amongst the razor-thin margins in one of the Premier League’s most storied rivalries, heroes are born.

Declan Rice is the latest to anoint himself saviour as Arsenal secured a 3-1 victory over Manchester United at the death, electrifying the Emirates Stadium crowd with his stoppage-time winner, before Gabriel Jesus shut the door minutes later.

The two sides sat level through the entire second half, as Marcus Rashford and Martin Odegaard cancelled each other out before the break. VAR denied both teams the chance to go in front, with a penalty to Arsenal chalked off upon review on the hour mark before Alejandro Garnacho's 88th-minute goal was nullified for offside.

Up stepped Rice, who gave Arsenal all three points by beating Andre Onana to his near post with a half-volley off a corner. It was a deserved victory for the hosts who controlled the match most of the way but had to that point failed to capitalise on much of their attacking possession.

Just months after captaining West Ham in a European final, he scores his first goal for Arsenal to beat Manchester United at the death. Yet it was only his final big contribution across a 100-minute masterclass from Rice.

The 24-year-old was sensational in the middle of the pitch, helping to filter build-up play forward and cover for the hole left by the aimless Kai Havertz. He won all three of his aerial duels and lost possession just 10 times in 85 touches, dominating the Manchester United midfield in a truly wonderful performance.

Surely Erik ten Hag will tell the media United were close to snatching this one, and they were, but when the Red Devils boss takes a true stock of this game, he'll see that they were well off it, and lucky to be in it so late. Marcus Rashford's opener came well against the run of play, and in truth, they didn't have another big moment in front of goal until Garnacho's late potential winner that was ruled out for offside.

Meanwhile, Arsenal controlled the midfield and dominated the attacking chances, with Havertz and Bukayo Saka both missing big chances to put this one out of reach much earlier. The United midfield was largely erased by Rice, and their attacking unit was invisible for the most part.

The officials played a big part in this match, but ultimately, Arsenal deserved the three points, and if United play like that against any other top club in the Premier League, they'll lose to most of them. There's a reason Man United have gone winless in their past 13 road matches against the "Big Six" plus Newcastle United.

While Mikel Arteta got out of dodge with all three points, he very nearly was left to rue his management of this match. Arteta continued with Havertz in midfield for this game, and the former Chelsea man had a horrid first half, producing a bad whiff in front of goal and the giveaway that led to United's opener.

Arteta then waited far too long to make substitutions, despite the fact Havertz was offering very little in the attack. Only with 14 minutes left — as the United substitutes were beginning to take hold of the match — did Fabio Vieira come onto the pitch in a substitution that should have been made at halftime. In truth, he should have been the starting lineup.

All this comes on top of Arteta's insistence on playing Thomas Partey at right-back, when he has a perfectly good option in Ben White available. The Gunners boss was only forced into his best defensive unit by an injury to Partey in training. The team selection has to be better from Arteta moving forward.

What drama! VAR denied both sides chances to take the lead, and ultimately the Gunners collect all three points at the death. It's a deserved victory, as Arsenal controlled proceedings throughout much of the game, but fell short in front of goal until the very end.

Declan Rice's first goal for his new club is a massive one, just months after winning his previous club a European title, and Gabriel Jesus put it away late. Manchester United will be bitterly disappointed with that, as they were dominated for much of the game but could have shared the points had they been able to protect Marcus Rashford's early lead or even added to it.

With Manchester United bombed forward in search of a last-gasp equaliser, Gabriel Jesus gets behind the Red Devils defence and scores on the break! He does well to evade one tackle in the 18-yard box and then slots it home.

It's assisted by Fabio Vieira who feeds Jesus well on the counter, with the United line up high. This one's done and dusted!
